SMA Solar Inverters

Inverters, as devices that convert DC into AC, first appeared at the beginning of the last century. Today there are more than 150 variations, but they are generally divided into three classes – stand-alone, grid-tied, and hybrid. Choosing an inverter for solar panels depends on the features of each class, but selecting the right brand and manufacturer is equally important.

What are the differences in stand-alone inverters for solar panels?

The stand-alone type can work with any alternative energy sources, as well as traditional diesel generators and other devices that generate electricity.

As part of a PV system, a stand-alone inverter performs the following tasks:

  • during daylight hours, converts DC from panels into AC (220 V);
  • sends the required amount of generation to energy-consuming devices;
  • any remaining generation is directed to charge the batteries;
  • when generation drops at the end of the day, switches to supplying energy from the stored battery charge;
  • if the batteries are fully discharged, switches to other sources (e.g., backup generators).

Task priorities are pre-programmed in the device’s control unit.

It is recommended to purchase a stand-alone SMA “Sunny Island” inverter for solar panels in Ukraine with at least a 20% power reserve.

Features of a grid-tied inverter for solar panels

The grid-tied type differs from the stand-alone type in that instead of sending excess energy to the batteries, it feeds it directly into the city or regional power grid.

Grid-tied inverters have four key advantages:

  1. They eliminate the need for storage batteries, reducing initial installation costs.
  2. They do not require excess capacity.
  3. Using a bi-directional meter with the grid allows earning 3.1 times more than consumption costs, thanks to the “green tariff” rate of 5.35 UAH/kWh versus the purchase rate of just 1.69 UAH/kWh.
  4. The SMA “Sunny Boy” grid-tied inverter is cheaper than the stand-alone type, as it does not require additional capacity.

Advantages of a hybrid inverter for solar panels

A hybrid inverter combines the advantages of both stand-alone and grid-tied models. Purchasing one allows the system to operate in any mode – fully autonomous, grid-connected, or a combination of both.

Its operating principle is as follows:

  1. During the day, part of the energy powers appliances, while the rest is distributed between batteries and the grid (the owner sets the proportions).
  2. At night, during bad weather, or long winter nights, the system draws energy from the batteries or the grid.
